Companies were finding it hard to produce reliable, consistent drugs from hemp and cannabis. Scientists researching the use of marijuana found links between the amount of use and increased crime and “insanity.” (Segal, 1986)
Many in the US government were torn. Some thought that there were still safe and appropriate uses for cannabis in the medical field. Others believed that it was too dangerous, highly addictive and too difficult to regulate for use in medicine (Medical Marijuana: Review and Analysis of Federal and State Policies, 2010)
